My Journey
As a "Wandering" photographer, I often come across powerful stories that capture the highs and lows of the human experience—true life lessons. These moments shape who we are and influence the art we create. This journal shares some of those stories.
Art, Apples, and Chalk: Exploring Ellijay and Marietta
This past weekend, my wife and I attended two art festivals that left us feeling inspired and relaxed. Our first stop was the annual Apple Festival in Ellijay, Georgia, where we navigated heavy traffic to enjoy the bustling main venue. However, we preferred the slower-paced downtown location, where we admired local art and indulged in delicious wine. Next, we visited Marietta’s “Chalktoberfest”, where talented chalk artists transformed the streets into stunning murals. We enjoyed craft beer from Red Hare Brewing and watched young artists showcase their skills. It was a perfect weekend of art, nature, and fun, and we’re already excited for next year’s events!
Port St. Joe Getaway
Recently I visited the charming town of Port St. Joe on Florida's northwest coast, part of the state's "Forgotten Coast." Known for its unspoiled beauty, friendly locals, and seaside charm, it's an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation and nature. The trip was made even more memorable by spending time with lifelong friends, enjoying the stunning coastline, and capturing beautiful landscapes with my camera.
Port St. Joe may be small, but it boasts fantastic food, with fresh oysters being a standout. The local restaurants, bars, and welcoming community made the experience even more enjoyable, offering a laid-back atmosphere rich with history and hospitality. This hidden gem provided the perfect blend of nature, adventure, and connection, reminding me of the joy that comes from exploring beautiful places with loved ones. If you're ever near the Florida Panhandle, Port St. Joe is a must-visit for its coastal views and vibrant culture.
First Century Ride
On August 1, 2024, I completed my first century ride, a 107.4-mile leg of the Tour Da Yoop from Marquette to Grand Marais. The route, set in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, featured stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and Lake Superior views. The ride was part of a fundraiser to fight childhood cancer, making the journey more meaningful. I was joined by my lifelong friend, Edd Zomerman, whose encouragement helped me through the challenging yet rewarding ride. The experience was a mix of physical endurance, breathtaking scenery, and the camaraderie of fellow riders, leaving me with a profound sense of accomplishment.
Pune, India
In July 2023, I traveled to Pune, India, for a five-day business trip to meet my India team in person for the first time. Despite the packed schedule and jet lag, I enjoyed the hospitality and energy of the bustling city, although navigating its chaotic traffic was a challenge. I also experienced authentic Indian cuisine, though I had to be cautious with the spices. During the trip, I visited Parvati Hill & Temple, climbed Vetal Tekdi, and enjoyed Irani tea and Bun Maska bread at the iconic Good Luck Café. The trip left a lasting impression, and I look forward to returning.
Protests in Austin
In the summer of 2020, Austin, Texas, became a hub of social unrest following the death of George Floyd, as thousands gathered to protest police brutality and systemic racism. Demonstrators, driven by personal experiences and collective outrage, shut down Interstate 35 multiple times, demanding justice and reform. While the protests were largely peaceful, tensions occasionally escalated, leading to confrontations with police, who used tear gas to disperse crowds.
These protests highlighted a growing distrust between communities of color and law enforcement, fueling calls for greater accountability and systemic change. Despite clashes, the movement fostered unity, resilience, and ongoing conversations about race, justice, and equality. The George Floyd protests marked a turning point for many, inspiring continued efforts toward a more just and inclusive society.
Haruka Weiser
On April 3, 2016, University of Texas freshman Haruka Weiser, a dance student, was tragically murdered. I discovered her memorial while wandering on the UT campus. This photo serves as a tribute to her life. Her ballet shoes are placed beside a bible. Truely a tragedy.
