Pune, India
In July of 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Pune, India, for a business trip that was as exhausting as it was enriching. It was my first time visiting India, and though the schedule was packed and the sleep scarce, the experience was something I won’t soon forget.
The purpose of the trip was to connect with members of my India team, all of whom I was meeting in person for the very first time. One of the highlights was finally getting to meet Paresh, a colleague I had only interacted with virtually until this point. The hospitality shown by the entire team was nothing short of exceptional, making me feel welcome from the moment I arrived.
Due to the compressed timeline, every day of the five-day visit was scheduled from sunrise to sunset. Jet lag had me in a bit of a daze, but the energy and spirit of Pune were enough to keep me going. With a population of around 7 million, the city is vibrant, chaotic, and full of life. Speaking of chaos, the traffic! Navigating Pune’s roads felt like an adrenaline sport all on its own. It’s a wonder how anyone manages to get anywhere unscathed, and I found myself in awe of the locals’ ability to weave through it all with ease.
Food-wise, I was treated to several authentic Indian meals, which was both a delightful and daring adventure for my palate. While the flavors were rich and vibrant, my low tolerance for spicy food meant that I had to tread carefully, often sticking to the milder dishes. Still, the experience of sharing meals with my team was an essential part of getting to know them better and understanding a bit more about their culture.
In addition to business, I managed to squeeze in a few moments of sightseeing. One of the most memorable stops was Parvati Hill & Temple, where I was able to take in panoramic views of the city and reflect on the serenity above the bustling streets below. I also had the chance to climb Vetal Tekdi, a hill popular with locals for trekking and catching beautiful sunrise and sunset views. These breaks from the fast-paced agenda offered moments of peace and connection with the natural beauty surrounding the city.
Another highlight was visiting Good Luck Café, a legendary spot in Pune where I got to try traditional Irani tea and Bun Maska bread. The simplicity of that meal—a warm bun with butter paired with tea—was surprisingly comforting and served as a reminder of the small joys you can find in everyday experiences.
Although the trip was short and intense, the energy, warmth, and culture of Pune left a lasting impression on me. From meeting my incredible team to braving the thrilling traffic, every part of the journey gave me a deeper appreciation for the city and its people. I look forward to future trips to India and hopefully, next time, with a bit more sleep and a little less spice!
